Geriatric Physical Therapy and Health Care Policy Laboratory

Professor in Charge: Associate Professor Hsuei-Chen Lee

By holding PhD degree from “health care policy & management” , and bachelor & master degree from “physical therapy”; Prof. Lee owns interdisciplinary research interest and experience encompassing both fields. “Medical utilization and health care outcome follow-up in stroke patients” and “Health promotion through exercise intervention for middle-and-old aged adults” are two major research focuses of Prof. Lee in recent 10 years. By using claims database of National Health Insurance in Taiwan, Prof. Lee published a series of academic articles regarding “stroke” in a variety of SCI (Science Citation Index) journals through collaboration with Dr. Ku-Chou Chang (a neurologist from Kaohsiung Chang Gung Memorial Hospital).

Regarding clinical aspects, Prof. Lee supervised many graduate students to conduct exercise intervention program for a variety of middle-and-old aged adults of suboptimal health condition, including: community-dwelling or institutionalized old adults with risk of frailty, falls or cardiovascular disease, adults with metabolic syndrome, mild stroke outpatients, and middle-aged women with stress incontinence. Exercise intervention has been proved to be a natural and cost-effective way to improve clients’ physical fitness, body composition, physical performance, and health-related quality of life, etc. The application of a variety of body-worn sensor tools on fall-risk assessment and prediction for older adults will be the next research task of Prof. Lee in the near future.
